According to iFixit, a site that makes a mission of tearing apart every Apple product they can get their hands on, the new 2011 MacBook Air comes with a much smaller Thunderbolt controller than those used in the company's MacBook Pro, iMac and Mac mini models that are Thunderbolt enabled. It turns out that the new controller chip is one of Intel's 'Eagle Ridge' chips, a lower-cost chip that could encourage other device manufacturers to include Thunderbolt in their devices.

A recent report by news site SemiAccurate seems to indicate that Apple may be considering making the jump from Intel's processor line to ARM processors in its laptops in the future. “The short story is that Apple is moving the laptop line, and presumably desktops too, to ARM based chips as soon as possible,” indicating that Apple's investment in ARM isn't just to develop for its iOS device lineup.
