This guide shows you how to replace your optical drive fitted to the Apple MacBook, it is handy for upgrading or replacing a faulty Optical Drive in your MacBook
- First of all, use a small coin on the battery-locking screw and rotate it 90 degrees clockwise.
- Remove the battery out of your Macbook.
- Remove 3 Phillips screws that are located at the battery compartment rear wall.
- Remove the L-shaped memory cover, gently slide it to the right, and then lift it out of your Macbook.
- Remove these screws:
- Two 14.5 mm Phillips screws.
- One 11 mm Phillips located in the middle of the Macbook case.
If those screws stick in the Macbook case, get a magnetized screwdriver to quickly draw them out. The shortest of those three screws is located in the middle.
- ·Remove these screws from the battery compartment rear wall:
- One 4 mm Phillips at the right side.
- Two 3 mm Phillips.
When reinstalling the screws, it may be better to push down the lower-part of the case to help you line up the screw holes.
- Remove 2 Phillips screws at the edges of the battery compartment right wall (not the screws near the battery connectors).
- Remove 4 Phillips screws at the battery compartment front wall. If you work from the left, loosen and remove 2nd, 4th, 7th and also 9th screws.
- Remove these screws at the back of the Macbook:
- Two 10.5 mm Phillips on the center.
- Remove the data cable for the display. If you can't find the pull-tab above the connector, it will be helpful to use the spudger to slowly disconnect the connector.
- First, peel up the foil tape that is located between the optical drive and the fan.
- Remove the Phillips screw; it secures the optical drive.
- Remove the orange cable from your optical drive.
- Use a spudger to carefully pry a silver metal bracket from the left side of your optical drive. You should be careful not to bend the metal bracket, as it's quite thin and bends easily. If you find that the bracket won't come free easily, you may heat the adhesive to make prying the metal bracket off easier.
- There is a L-shaped black tape above the optical drive. Peel it up.
- Peel up a silver foil tape from your optical drive.

- Two 7 mm Philips on the edges.
- Remove 2 Phillips screws at the optical side of your Macbook. It's not necessary to remove similar screws at the other side of your Macbook
- There is a keyboard and trackpad ribbon connecting the upper part of the case with the logic board, you shouldn’t pull the upper part of the case off entirely just yet.
- Gently pry up the upper part of the case.
- While you hold up the upper part of the case, use a spudger to slowly pry up the orange trackpad and keyboard cable from the connector.
- Hold the white plastic tab that is attached to the hard drive and slowly pull it to the left, this will remove the hard drive from your Macbook.
- Remove 2 Phillips screws located at the front edge of your optical drive.
- Remove the orange ribbon cable that connects optical drive with the logic board.
- Remove the hard drive cable.

- Remove a Phillips screw that secures the display data cable to a metal framework.
- Pull up a display data cable that is located along the edge of your optical drive to reveal another Phillips screw.

- In some models a Bluetooth cable may cover the screw; gently push it aside before you remove the screw.
- Find the Bluetooth antenna board that is located at the right side of your optical drive, lift it carefully.
- De-route the hard drive cable that is located along the front of your optical drive.
- Slowly, lift your optical drive and then slide it up and out from the Macbook.
- Peel up an orange tape that partially covers an orange optical drive cable.

- You should reapply this tape again at the same position on the replacement optical drive.

- You should reapply this tape again at the same position on the replacement optical drive.
- Remove a couple of Phillips screws that secure the mounting bracket at the right side of your optical drive. The bracket can slide back and forth slightly, you shouldn't tighten the screws too much as the bracket may not slide smoothly.
- Use the spudger to pry a gray Bluetooth antenna holder off located above the optical drive.
You should reapply this holder again at the same position above the replacement optical drive.
To reassemble your Macbook, follow the above steps in reverse order.
