Alongside the launch of Apple's new OS X 10.7 Lion, the company took the opportunity to refresh their MacBook Air and Mac Mini computer lines, updating both with newer hardware, higher performance and adjusted pricing. There was, however, one casualty on the day; Apple's iconic white MacBook, which has its roots in the company's iBook offering that finally saw Apple laptops in the hands of consumers, was discontinued. After more than a decade of seeing glossy white laptops with a shining Apple logo virtually everywhere, the company has decided that its time has come, and the white plastic MacBook is no more.

Launched in 1999, the initial iBook laptops came in a “clamshell” shape, with different colors that were meant to play off of the company's iMac lines, which were selling strongly. In 2001, the new iBook G3 was released, which packed many improvements but dropped the color schemes that Apple had launched the iBooks with. The iBook G3 was offered in a single color, white, with a polycarbonate case that offered significantly increased strength and a much smaller overall package.
As it turned out, Apple's customers loved the white iBook G3, and the company began transitioning almost all of its consumer products from their existing designs to the new white polycarbonate look, including the iMac, eMac and the newly-launched iPods. Apple's 'professional' hardware, including the PowerBook and the company's high-caliber workstations, kept the anodized aluminum look which provides the ancestry for today's aluminum unibody MacBook, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air designs.
The iBook lasted through multiple revisions, until finally shedding the name and becoming the MacBook in 2006. The first Apple MacBook launched with - you guessed it - a white polycarbonate look that took design hints from the iBook G4 but ended up thinner and slightly wider, thanks to the new widescreen display. Aside from upgrades to the white MacBook's internals, there was little in the way of changes until October 2009, when Apple released the new white polycarbonate unibody MacBook. Following in the footsteps of the aluminum MacBook Pro, the single-piece unibody case brought additional strength and a lighter overall feeling to the white MacBook, which has lasted through until today, when the design was finally put to rest by Apple.
Users that want to pick up a brand new white polycarbonate MacBooks have a couple of options remaining to them. The first would be to check with any Apple resellers in the local area to see if they have stock remaining. Although OS X 10.7 Lion and the new MacBook Air models have just launched, many retailers had stock of the white MacBook on hand with no plans to liquidate them just to be rid of them. The second option is to take a trip up to the local college or university campus in your area and check the computer store. Apple has committed to keeping the white MacBook alive for educational institutions, although as of yet it's unsure if the company means to sell just to bulk buyers or if individuals students will be able to get a white MacBook to start the school year.
Regardless of how one felt about the white MacBook, it's clear that one of the most popular laptop designs in history has finally been put to rest. Apple sold many millions of the white devices, and it seemed that you had to look no further than the closest coffee shop, library or study area to see someone happily browsing away on one.
The MacBook Air is the company's answer to the white MacBook - it just remains to be seen if the incredibly thin and light Air will sell as well as the chunky white plastic MacBook that many came to love.
